Joshua  Gundersen “The Rising Son”

Pacific Northwest Native,  Joshua John Gundersen, is an artist, upcoming, rising and definitely someone to take note of.  Born in Washington, raised in Ketchikan Alaska and spending several years in Ventura California, this multi-media man has a well-rounded, eclectic collection of self-taught art that really gives you the impression that has done this creating professionally. Interestingly enough, he’s only been in the art “scene” a mere four to five years.

His artistic creations or “creations of beauty” can only be described as… WOW. He paints, he sculpts, he’s a “rising son” in the street art/graffiti world and it seems there’s nothing this young man cannot do. He currently resides in Oregon and goes to the local community college.

When describing his art as a whole, his creations will sometimes shock you.  He will sometimes scare you but one thing he does not do is disappoint you. These sometimes crude, unabashedly straight up, “in your face” pieces, haunt you. You never seem to walk away without somehow being almost mystified by the images that will surely flash in your mind, seep into your memory… making it virtually impossible to forget. But you won’t forget. The more you ponder, the more you think of what you’ve seen, the more likely you’ll be addicted.

Some of the paintings he’s created are crude pieces, all of them involve hour upon hour of special detail and his usage of acrylics, oils sharpies, pens, pencils, linens, moss, string.. even hair, is fanatic. One could compare him to Basquet.

Joshua’s Street art and graffiti is highly political and very serious but always has clever undertones of humor and sympathy. It is almost invisible in nature however if you look for his name “CASH”, you’ll see his work everywhere. He also uses the name JJ Guns.As any reputable street artist will tell you is on their resume, he was arrested.  Charged with felonies involving “criminal Mischief”, which folks are not minor crimes. What is most honorable and a great example of his strength is that he served his time and continues to pay for this “crime “with humble efforts to keep within the laws of his county and paying incredible fines and dues., he would like to build a free expression wall to help youth and adult artists alike with their expression of self in The city of Forest Grove. This wall is meant to help keep street art alive and safe, give art space to those who desire it and to assist folks in not having to experience the tragedy that this phoenix has risen from. He has no bounds and his understanding of the trials, tribulations and honest view of society as a whole will surely help his community where unfortunately it ignored him.

Joshua is a role model to all that are fortunate to surround him. The strength, persistence and valor it has taken to bite the proverbial bullet and his hard work to regain his place in the so called normalcy of his community is something to behold. If you ever get a peek at this bright, innovative man, you’ll too see that his quirky sense of humor, sly smile and twinkle in his eye immediately calms you.. makes you remember, if you’ve ever been to a warm California day at the beach.

Keep your eyes wide open when it comes to JJ Guns because their pointed at you and if you pay close attention, you’ll be swayed into truly opening you mind and heart into the idea of embracing our differences as a whole. You might find YOU will be inspired to pick up a paintbrush or better yet a can of spray paint and let your inner artist SOAR.
